Why Women in Their 40’s & 50’s Wait So Long To Follow Their Passion

Is this you?

You’ve created a great life for yourself. You’ve been successful in your career. You’ve raised a family. You’ve put all your energy into building someone else’s dream – whether in your career or your family. And now you’re sitting there thinking…what about me? What about what I want out of life? Heck, if you’re like most women in their 40’s and 50’s you don’t even know for sure what you want. You’ve never really taken the time to think about it. And if you have, you probably came up blank or thought that what you’d really like to do will never bring you the income you still need.

Trust me, you are not alone. But then you probably know this. I talk to women all the time in the exact same position. They want more, but they’re not really sure what “more” is. And worse yet, they are frozen in the fear that they will not be able to make a change at this point.

Through our work with women like you we have found some very common reasons why women tend to wait so long to follow their passion.

  1. Fear. Whether you call it fear or not, in most cases it boils down to some form of fear. Fear of failure. Fear that “everyone” will think you’re crazy. Fear that you have no transferable skills. Fear that you are too old to start over. These fears are real. They are also excuses. The truth is, the pain you’re are suffering by staying where you are in your current situation is not stronger than your desire to change. Otherwise you would. But what does staying there mean for you in the long run? Five years from now? Ten years from now?
  2. Lack of passion. Let’s face it, you’ve been doing so much for everyone else for so long you barely know who YOU really are anymore. Most women we talk to seldom if ever take the time to really dig deep and study what makes them feel fulfilled. I would be willing to bet that there are glimmers of fulfillment in what you do now that you simply don’t recognize. There are moments in time when you lose yourself in what you’re doing or you find yourself smiling and energized for an instant. Somewhere in that glimmer is a passion, a signal or a spark of that passion that’s lying dormant.
  3. Lack of Confidence. Most of the women we work with have a desire for independence, they want to start a business. However, the most common thing we hear is “who am I to start a business? What would I even do?” They can’t see that their years of experience have built an incredible bank of knowledge and skills. Knowledge and skills that are transferable.

Of course there are other factors that come in to play. A lack of financial acumen, knowing how and where to even start, and understanding what’s possible. But these roadblocks can be overcome when the desire, clarity around your passion and confidence in your abilities are in place.

At Way Beyond Ordinary we help women just like you create a life you love and follow your passions. Our goal is to help you unleash the passion and confidence to be brave enough to make your dreams come true.
